The perennial bombing of Gaza

Steven Salaita: For the past few hours, Israel has been bombing the Gaza Strip. How easily the world forgets the untold suffering of its people, which in a territory so small can only be indiscriminate. US political discourse, especially during an election, produces enough noise to drown out the constant sound of bombs in Yemen, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Palestine. In the fusty language of US exceptionalism, the bombs are either the implicit cost of modernity or accidents of altruistic excess. We can choose to ignore those bombs. Their victims cannot. Ignorance is never simply a personal choice.
