Syed Ali Safvi: Women in Indian-controlled Kashmir have been the victims of violence and oppression over the past two decades. They have silently suffered the trauma, hardships and humiliation, without letting anything dampen their spirit. To honor the courage and resilience shown by these gritty women, people in Kashmir have observed Women’s Resistance Day. The event coincides with the 23rd anniversary of Kunan Poshpora mass rape, which is one of the darkest chapters in Kashmir’s history. It’s also a gruesome incident that has become a reference point to highlight crimes against women in this Muslim majority region. According to villagers, Indian army personnel raped more than 50 women on the intervening night of February 23-24, 1991. International human rights bodies including the Human Rights Watch have estimated that between 50 and 100 women were raped.
