Pentagon blows up thousands of homes in Afghanistan
?”Borrowing a page from its infamous “pacification” effort in South Vietnam, where peasant villages were napalmed and burned to the ground to “save them from the communists,” the Obama-ordered surge in Afghanistan has been secretly blowing up thousands of homes and leveling portions of the Afghan countryside.” Full article.
Criminalized Gardening
how effed up is this??? “Today the U.S. Senate will vote to pass bill 510, the notorious “Food Safety Modernization Act”. If S510 is passed, personal control over gardening will be severely restricted and saving seeds will be outlawed, theoretically setting the stage for a complete food monopoly by Monsanto and its GM…O agenda. In short, it will grant the U.S. government new authority over the public’s right to grow, trade and transport any foods. Food production of any kind will essentially be under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security and anyone caught growing food without permission, even in their own backyard, could be charged with a criminal offense.” Full article.
Rigoberta Menchu to Oakland youth: find courage in culture
Ms. Menchú spoke of ancestors and her indigenous culture and how important it is to be connected to each other and the Earth in a deep way, not just a superficial way through Twitter and other online means. Ms. Menchú highlighted our collective disconnectedness when she asked the simple question: where does the sun ris…e? Very few in attendance could answer that question. More here.
Scanners – The Prequel
Full body scanners share a common trait with the misdirected solutions to avoid a future 9/11 – the Patriot Act, illegal wiretapping, suspension of habeas corpus, torture, etc. The scanners represent a major intrusion into our lives, a violation of our rights, a likely health hazard, and a major diversion from the real… issue at hand – incompetence and/or deception in the handling of identified threats to the nation, individuals who somehow bypass the very security protections put in place to stop their attacks. IDF: Covering Up the Murderous Crimes of Cast Lead
Lt. Col. Yehuda HaCohen, Givati 453 Rotem commander, Operation Cast Lead, whose soldiers killed two Palestinian women evacuating their home, holding white flags: ”I don’t think we have to get excited about this [Goldstone] Report so that we don’t feel we can explain why we protected our own citizens. It’s not a questio…n of morality [!]. There is a conflict between two peoples, one of which kidnaps soldiers and fires on civilians [!!!!]. This is war and civilians are harmed in it. On our side too civilians were harmed. Goldstone has to understand that we evacuated Gaza so they could lead their own lives. The ball is in their court.” Full article.

A Petition Against Four More Years of War
We object to the United States proposal for Afghanistan being presented this week to NATO ministers. It is not a peace plan. It is a plan for four more years of combat by US and NATO forces. It is not a plan for US or Western troop withdrawals but for further occupation. It is a proposal to gradually lessen Western cas…ualties and lessen Western visibility while transitioning to Western-financed, Western-armed, and Western-advised Afghan army combat in a civil conflict. It is a plan for long-term Western military bases. Full article.

poster girl
saw “poster girl” on monday, at nazareth college. the doc is about iraq veteran robynn murray and the challenges she faces after coming back from the war. she is dealing with PTSD, the VA system, and coming to terms with her experiences in iraq. both director sara nesson and robynn murray were in attendance. robynn is involved with IVAW and the combat paper project. she is incredibly courageous and honest. in answer to a question she talked about being sexually assaulted while still in training to go to iraq. she reported the assault but it was pretty much ignored. with everything else that she is struggling with, this added a whole new layer of complexity to her story. too bad it was not included in the film. one out of three women get raped or sexually assaulted in the military. wonder how we’re supposed to protect the rights of afghan women. more about the film here.

The Gaza Mono-Logues
In 2010, with the support of UNICEF, ASHTAR Theatre and Ali Abu Yassine started training a group of children aged 14 to 18 using drama therapy and creative writing. The first three months of work focused on the wounds of the Gaza attack of Dec 08-Jan 09 – the youth’s individual experiences, their dreams, fears and hopes. This work led to the creation of The Gaza Mono-Logues. ASHTAR Theatre is mobilizing its global artistic network to produce recitals of The Gaza Mono-Logues with youth groups in 30 world cities, in as many languages, all opening on the same day: Oct 17, 2010. In November, each partnering country will send one young actor to meet us in New York where we will perform at the UN, in front of the representatives after their annual meeting on the Question of Palestine.
Repeal Aasia Bibi’s death sentence
A Pakistani court has sentenced to death a Christian mother of five for blasphemy.
Aasia Bibi, 45, was sentenced on November 8, 2010 by a court in Nankana district in Punjab. She was arrested in Ittanwalai village and prosecuted under Section 295 C of the Pakistan Penal Code, and has been awarded the death penalty.
We, the undersigned, believe that Aasia Bibi, being a working class Christian woman, is one of the many victims of religious intolerance and sectarian hatred, which is protected and promoted by Pakistan’s vicious and obscene Blasphemy law.

Haitian American Novelist on “The Immigrant Artist at Work”
“I think people forget that there’s also this wonderful and powerful history of revolt, of resilience, of resistance, and this wonderful art that’s followed in its wake that has this great beauty to offer to the world. And it’s something that I think, in all the tragedies that have occurred in Haiti over the years, that people don’t get a chance to see and experience as much.” Interview with Haiti American novelist Edwidge Danticat here.
