Tuning Out the Taliban

the split within pakistani society itself. interesting how condemning drone attacks is disdainfully described as “patriotic, conservative, islamist apologist” by someone who calls himself a “cultural critic” – what the hell is that anyway? this guy and other like-minded critics might be surprised to find out that drone attacks are condemned here in the u.s. as well – not by conservatives, but by liberals who believe in the sanctity of life and human rights. the vast majority of people killed by drone attacks are civilians (mostly women and children). but as long as the cultural critic’s family remains unaffected he can continue to cheer them on. well, at least he’s not patriotic or an islamist apologist. watch the video.

The thirty-year musical and social history of Tinariwen is a fascinating and inspiring tale. Initially a loose collection of displaced Touareg musicians centred around Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, who, although born in Mali, grew up in the refugee camps near the Malian border in Algeria and later around the southern Algerian city of Tamanrasset following the suppression of the Touareg people by the new independent Malian government in the early 1960s. Coming together in the late 1970s with a shared passion for everything from traditional Touareg music & poetry to western rock and pop artists such as Hendrix, Santana, Bob Marley and Led Zeppelin, the collective steadily built their reputation in and around the Sahara desert.

Welcome to Slackistan: Pakistan’s first ever slacker movie

Visitors to Islamabad, the small but perfectly formed capital of Pakistan, could be forgiven for thinking that the only things to rock the place were terrorist attacks. But they would be wrong. The city, population approximately 600,000, forms the backdrop for the country’s first slacker movie. Titled Slackistan, the low-budget independent film from first-time British director Hammad Khan features the Pakistani young and privileged as they drift around in a rarefied world of cars, dating, drinking and parties. Worrying only about what to wear and where to go, this group of fashionably-dressed kids could be in Orange County or New York’s Upper East Side. Full article.

Main Ne Uss Se Yeh Kaha, Mei Nei Kaha, By Laal Band

Main Nay Kaha is a satirical poem by the famous leftist poet Habib Jalib called Musheer (Advisor). Jalib wrote it in response to a conversation he had with Hafiz Jalandari during the time of Ayub Khans dictatorship. It remains just as fresh and valid today.

This poem has been put to music by Laal (Shahram Azhar & T…aimur Rahman) a new Pakistani music group dedicated to resistance music and poetry. Shahram Azhar and Taimur Rahman are also political activists of the Communist Mazdoor Kissan Party and their poetry, music, and activism constitute an integrated whole the essence of which is always revolutionary. The CMKP has been an integral part of the lawyers movement and the movement for democracy in Pakistan.

The music video contains real images of events in Karachi, London, and Lahore during the tumultuous period between December 27th and February 18th. The song and video were recorded on a shoe-string budget of one session each.

This video and song are connected to a documentary on a journey through a life-changing period in the history of Pakistan. The journey begins in Pakistan on the eve of the assassination of Benazir and the ensuing grief, violence, and carnage. The film maker travels to London to discover a group of young activists organizing protests against Emergency rule. Following these activists full circle to Pakistan, the documentary captures the events around the 2008 elections. The film thus captures a moment in the life of Pakistan, from Benazirs assassination to the elections, through the lens of young activists.

Legendary Native American Singer-Songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie

In a Democracy Now! special, an hour of conversation and music with Cree Indian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. In the turbulent 1960s, she was just out of college but already famous for her beautiful voice and moving lyrics in songs like “Universal Soldier” and “Now that the Buffalo’s Gone.” Over the years, Buffy Sainte-Marie has worked with the American Indian Movement, but also with Sesame Street, and even Hollywood, winning an Academy Award for the song “Up Where We Belong” in 1982. She’s won international recognition for her music, has a PhD in fine arts, and began a foundation for American Indian Education that she remains closely involved with. We speak with the folk icon about her life, her music, censorship, and her singing and speaking out about the struggles of Native American peoples for the past four decades.
