Chithralekha ended her 122 days struggle in front of the Kannur Secretariat on Monday. This was after the Chief Minister assured her in writing that she would be compensated with a piece of land in Kannur and that all the false cases against her and husband would be withdrawn. Such an understanding was reached after Chithralekha met the Chief Minister when he came on a visit to Kannur.
So far in spite of various interventions by different organizations, the government had not been ready to listen to Chithralekha’s demands. It was at this point that Chithralekha made the statement that she and her family should be allowed mercy killing if the government was not willing to help her, as she thought that it was a cowardice to commit suicide. This statement was featured in one of the newspapers on Monday. And on Monday the government relented. More here.
