Teju Cole: Since Sunday, I haven’t stopped thinking about what Alejandro González Iñárritu said on receiving his best director Oscar:
“Ego loves competition, because for someone to win, someone has to lose. But the paradox is that true art can’t be compared, can’t be labeled, can’t be defeated.”
I find it helpful to be mindful of that space, and to try to be in it: with what cannot be defeated, with what gets neither its strength nor its value from rivalrous calculation.
