Deeply saddened to learn this morning that Saba Mahmood has passed away. Professor of anthropology at University of California, Berkeley, author of stunning books like “Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject” and more recently “Religious Difference in a Secular Age: A Minority Report,” she shifted paradigms by reframing discourse that’s become pat and uninspired. I didn’t know her personally but I admire her – I quote her compulsively and am constantly referring people to her work. It’s a terrible loss. I feel it particularly as a Muslim woman from Pakistan. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
I will be posting about her work today.
