Asma Jahangir passes away

A sad day for our family, a sad day for Pakistan. My husband’s beloved cousin Asma Jahangir has passed away. Her moral fortitude was well known in Pakistan. Omar Waraich, Deputy South Asia Director at Amnesty International wrote: “Asma Jahangir was the bravest person I knew. She fearlessly stood up to dictators, thugs, misogynists. She was never daunted by the attacks that came her way. She never wavered from her principles. Her loss is incalculable.” Human rights lawyer, social activist, co-founder of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. But also someone who walked her talk, both publicly and privately. We attended her eldest daughter’s wedding last year and spent a lot of time with the family. She had incredible energy, warmth, compassion and wit. People like her seem to be immortal. She will be sorely missed by many. Surely we belong to God, and to God we return.

billo apa in her younger days. always fighting the system. always fearless.
