Info for travelers and their families

Many legitimate reports of green card holders being detained and turned away at airports. Most important immediate actions in wake of yesterday’s ban – get info out to those on the front lines on travel & know-your-rights:

Part I: Travel

1) If you have a family member, friend, or acquaintance who is a VISA HOLDER or GREEN CARD HOLDER from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, or Libya – advise them NOT to leave the country.

2) If you have a family, friend, or classmate who is a VISA HOLDER or GREEN CARD HOLDER from any Muslim-majority country, who speak limited English, keep them appraised of yesterday’s Executive Order (it may be expanded to include more states)

3) If you have a family, friend, or acquaintance that has been detained or is in transit (and may be detained), contact Abed Ayoub and the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), at legal@adc.org. Or contact local legal teams in Chicago, NY, LA, etc.

Part II: Know your rights from Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (needs to be translated)

ATTENTION: Immigrants and Refugees from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen:

YOU HAVE RIGHTS.

If you are denied entry or detained at a port of entry by a Customs and Border Protection here’s what you should do:
Green Card Holders: Resist any demands to give up your green card. Do NOT sign Form I-407, even if they say it will make things easier.

Demand a hearing from a judge: You have the right to a hearing with an immigration judge. Do NOT relinquish this right.
Demand to Speak to an Attorney: You have the right to be represented by an attorney. Ask to speak to an attorney, and discuss details of your case with only your attorney, not CBP.
