i recently got an iphone after resisting the intrusion for many years. still try to keep its use to a minimum (so that it functions mostly as a phone) but am in love with its ability to store and play a large collection of songs and music. hadn’t had this luxury since the walkman, which was much more cumbersome of course (yeah, skipped the ipod completely even though my son tried hard to set me up). how lovely it is to be driving down the streets of rochester in the middle of winter and hear “angie” by the rolling stones, followed by an old fashioned french ballad by dalida or edith piaf, then “go it alone” by beck, only to hear rafi sing “yeh reshmi zulfein” (a song my parents were fond of back in the 60s and that i grew up with). to be able to excavate the lyrics from my memory and sing along each of these songs is pure nostalgic bliss.
