this morning i learned from zahraa that a fried egg, sunny side up, is called an “eye egg” in arabic because of how the yolk looks like a pupil inside an eye. i did some research and discovered interesting names for fried eggs: of course “oeuf au plat” (egg in a dish) in france, “mirror egg” (because of its smooth shiny surface) in germany, hungary and some scandinavian countries, “glass egg” (for the same reason) in albania and along the mediterranean coast, “cow’s-eye egg” (because of the larger eyes i suppose) in italy and malaysia, “star-shaped egg” (on account of its irregular shape) in spain and portugal, just “eye” in romania and “eye on egg” in serbia. who knew?
