From Julien Salingue [my translation in English]: Today Barack Obama compared Shimon Peres to Nelson Mandela.
It’s outrageous to compare a man who spent 28 years of his life in prison for fighting a discriminatory regime with a man who for over 50 years was a Deputy Minister, Minister, Member of Parliament, Prime Minister and finally President of a state led by a discriminatory regime.
But what is more scandalous is to forget that even as Nelson Mandela lay wasting away in prison, Peres, already Minister of Defense, continued to maintain excellent relations with the dignitaries of the Pretoria regime.
In this photograph Peres (right) is in the company of South Africa’s chief of propaganda and the head of South African intelligence. Note the presence of another so-called “man of peace” (second from left): Yitzakh Rabin, who was then Prime Minister of Israel.
When this photo was taken, in 1975, Mandela had already been in prison for 13 years. That year, Defense Minister Peres, signed a secret agreement with his South African counterpart, Pieter Willem Botha, future president of the apartheid state. The agreement entailed the delivery of nuclear weapons to South Africa by the state of Israel. #NobelPrizeofShame

En soi, c’est déjà scandaleux de comparer un homme qui a passé 28 ans de sa vie en prison pour avoir lutté contre un régime discriminatoire et un homme qui a été durant plus de 50 ans député, ministre, premier ministre et finalement président d’un État doté d’un régime discriminatoire.
Mais ce qui est plus scandaleux encore, c’est de faire semblant d’oublier qu’alors même que Nelson Mandela était en prison, Pérès, déjà ministre, entretenait d’excellentes relations avec les dignitaires du régime de Pretoria.
Sur cette photo, Pérès (à droite) se trouve ainsi en compagnie du responsable de la propagande et du chef des renseignements sud-africains. On notera (deuxième en partant de la gauche) la présence d’un autre prétendu “homme de paix” : Yitzakh Rabin, alors premier ministre.
Lorsque cette photo est prise, nous sommes en 1975, et Mandela est donc depuis 13 ans en prison. Cette année-là, Pérès, ministre de la Défense, signera en outre un accord secret avec son homologue sud-africain, Pieter Willem Botha, futur président de l’État d’apartheid.
