ruined – a play by lynn nottage

read “ruined” – the pulitzer prize winning play by lynn nottage. am still reeling from the emotional shock of it. set in a brothel in the congo, the play is based on stories of congolese refugee women interviewed by nottage in uganda. wars r ugly by definition but it’s women who pay the heaviest price. and since most wars happen “over there” so we don’t have to fight them “here,” it’s mostly colored women.

reminded me of lines from suheir hammad’s poem “first writing since” which she wrote after 9/11:

“but i know for sure who will pay.
in the world, it will be women, mostly colored and poor. women will have to bury children, and support themselves through grief.”

lynn nottage talked about the play on charlie rose.
