It looked like a clump of small dusty nettles
\nGrowing wild at the gable of the house
\nBeyond where we dumped our refuse and old bottles:
\nUnverdant ever, almost beneath notice.<\/p>\n
But, to be fair, it also spelled promise
\nAnd newness in the back yard of our life
\nAs if something callow yet tenacious
\nSauntered in green alleys and grew rife.<\/p>\n
The snip of scissor blades, the light of Sunday
\nMornings when the mint was cut and loved:
\nMy last things will be first things slipping from me.
\nYet let all things go free that have survived.<\/p>\n
Let the smells of mint go heady and defenceless
\nLike inmates liberated in that yard.
\nLike the disregarded ones we turned against
