free speech vs hate speech

Islamophobic and anti-Arab speech are not just tolerated and acceptable forms of discourse in this country, but often presented as legitimate. Had this not been the case, the infamous “Innocence of Muslims” Youtube video would have long been taken down under Youtube’s terms of service, among many other relevant provisions: “We encourage free speech and defend everyone’s right to express unpopular points of view. But we don’t permit hate speech (speech which attacks or demeans a group based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, and sexual orientation/gender identity).” (Fadi Kiblawi)
