U.S. to apologize for 1940s Guatemala STD experiments

U.S. government medical researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala, including institutionalized mental patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis without their knowledge or permission more than 60 years ago.

According to the site Livescience, the research was unearthed by Wellesley College researcher Susan Reverby. Her study, “Normal Exposure’ and Inoculation Syphilis: A PHS ‘Tuskegee’ Doctor in Guatemala, 1946-48,” draws a link between the research in Guatemala and the notorious Tuskegee syphilis experiment, where hundreds of African-Americans in Alabama were infected with the disease.
